I posted my entry over on LJ, and it’s friends locked. LJ just does a better job with poetry line breaks, or at least my theme there seems to. Here’s the link, you’re welcome to reply on either platform.

I don’t know if it will get me to round 3, but I’m very pleased with it, so it is what it is.

Entry here: https://roina-arwen.livejournal.com/1712234.html

Well, I got it written and am happy with my entry. I did indeed do an acrostic, and my total word count was 464 words, out of a maximum of 500.

The only downside to the competition is how long one has to wait for results, lol! If I make it to round 3 - and only the top four from each group will move onward - that round won’t start until February 3rd. Which means we get our results the day before. So…. Yeah.

After the submission period is over, I’ll post my entry here.

Just to whet your appetite, my title is “Penelope’s Quest.”

Stay tuned for the entry on Monday!

Just got the round two assignment in my email. We have a bit under three days to submit a rhyming story, using a maximum of 500 words. There are 22 groups with 32 writers in each.

I’m in group 9, and my assignment is:
Genre: Drama
Theme: Independence
Emotion: Regretful

Per instructions: “If the assigned theme is not easily apparent and/or does not play an important role in the plot, the writer will run the risk of being disqualified.”

The emotion has to be expressed at least once in the piece; I don’t have to use that specific word as long as the emotion of regret is apparent. To quote the email: “the emotion must be expressed in the story somehow through narration, a character's actions, dialogue, or another way. If the emotion is not clearly expressed in the story, it will run the risk of being disqualified.”

Now to come up with a basic plot to base my rhyme upon. I’m considering also trying to make it an acrostic, in addition to the rhyming couplets, but I’ll have to see how that goes. Fingers crossed!!

Guess what??? My round 1 Rhyming Story Challenge got FIFTH place in my group!! This is my best finish to date!

FYI: There were 3,186 writers participating in 88 groups for round one, with approximately 36 writers per group.

The top 8 from each group will participate in round 2 this weekend, and we get put into new groups. Can you tell I’m excited?

Including myself, there are 704 writers advancing, which is still a rather large field!

It’s been several months since our first round entries were submitted, so if you’d like a refresher, you can find my “Italian Innuendo” over here: https://roina-arwen.livejournal.com/1711347.html

I’ll update with my new assignment once we get them. Again I say, HUZZAH!!!

I stand on the smoky field, surveying his unexplained
Treachery, to behold bodies rent and ruined, the
Sweet smell of decay and rot assaulting my senses.

Nowhere to be seen are the decorated generals
Of this battle - heads violently separated from
Torsos, so all are equal unto Death.

My black steed snorts and stomps his hooves,
Yearning to move forward to unblemished territory.

Famine, War, Conquest, and Death await our eventual arrival
As I raise my sword skyward and murmur a prayer for
Unappreciated soldiers, who blindly follow commands from
Leaders, and give their all with steel in their hands and hearts,
Tasked with defense and dedication to king and country.

On this sheltered ornamental pond
at the foot of the Ko’olau mountains,
you softly croon to your mate.
Side by side, red beaks dip down
to break the calm surface, then lift to preen
midnight black feathered flanks.

The large orange and white fish watch coyly,
avoiding the churning water
as faster and faster you dip and preen,
dip and preen,
pausing briefly to peruse your partner,
and appreciate his fine ebony plumage.

Finally you make contact, pressing
your breast against his - once, twice, thrice.
You raise and lower your graceful neck smoothly
as his dark, beady eyes watch your motions
with sideways glances, turning first
one way then the other.

It is time to intertwine.

His neck draped lovingly across yours,
He turns and paddles alongside, then mounts and
gently grasps your neck with his eager bill.
Wings spread for stability, slowly you swim forward
and raise your tail to facilitate the act.
Your body, submerged in the cool water, is filled.

Sated, he dismounts and paddles vigorously.
A duet of low-pitched rumbles celebrates the union.
You wash and preen again, shaking wings and tail,
a glint of white flight feathers underscores the black.
He is your mate for life, and you are his,
with a silvery cygnet ring the desired outcome.

“Yeah, I’ve had a few regrets… I just don’t want to talk about it right now,” Vic said, as he slouched down and pushed his wavy shoulder length hair away from his face.

Spotting a loose thread on the hem of his Dr. Strange T-shirt, Vic slowly and deliberately pulled at it, brow furrowed in concentration.

Glenda nodded, and scribbled a few sentences on her notepad. “We’ll come back to you,” she said, then glanced to her left. “Frank? Would you like to share something?”

Frankie ignored her and stared at his hands, trying to remove particles of imaginary dirt from beneath his pristine fingernails.

“Frank?”

He startled, and finally glanced up. “What?”

“Would you like to share any regrets you’ve been holding on to?” Glenda asked.

“Oh… uh… sure,” Frankie said, and slowly wiped the palms of his hands up and down the thighs of his freshly washed blue jeans, deep in thought. “Well, I suppose one regret is how long I hold onto grudges against people who have wronged me. I’m not one to just forgive and forget, you know?”

Glenda jotted down a few notes, including Victor’s not-so-surreptitious eye roll. “That’s a very good insight,” she replied. “Anything else?”

Frankie shook his head. “Not yet.”

Glenda swiveled her chair slightly to the right. “Victor? It’s your turn now.”

Vic sighed dramatically, and straightened up. “Fine. I regret my impulse to meddle in affairs that are beyond the ken of mortal men.”

He glanced almost sheepishly at Frank, then down at the carpeted floor. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

Frank’s watery blue eyes widened. “Pardon? I didn’t quite catch that.”

Victor looked Frank directly in the face. His angular chin and squared-off forehead gave him a perpetually stern look. “I’m sorry,” Vic repeated. “I’m sorry I tried to create life, I’m sorry I couldn’t make you the man that I envisioned. I’m sorry you’ve been treated like a monster,” he cried. He rose abruptly and strode to the window, where he stood, head down, shoulders slumped and shaking.

Frankie could see Vic’s reflection in the window. There were tears streaming down Victor’s smooth, youthful cheeks. Frank felt a few sympathetic droplets flowing down his own weather-worn face.

“It’s all my fault and I’M SORRY!” Victor stated, turning back around. He glanced at Glenda. She had happy tears in her eyes, and smiled at him, pleased with his breakthrough.

Frank stood, unfolding his burly form from the chair, and rose to his full eight feet of height. He enveloped the smaller man in a hug. “I forgive you,” he said softly, and thumped him on the back. “Truly, Victor Frankenstein, I do.”

“This week has been craaaaazy,” Ginny said, swirling her rum & coke before taking a sip. The gentle clinking of the ice reminded her of the wind chimes that used to hang in the tree outside her childhood bedroom window. “I’m so glad you were available - it’s been far too long since we last got together.”

“Right? I’ve hated having to go back to the office these last few weeks. I really enjoyed working from home with nobody but Tasha Yarn to keep me company,” Sarah replied with a grin.

Ginny smiled back, thinking about Sarah’s aging tabby. Tasha Yarn was a sweet and friendly cat, but much to their surprise, she was also an excellent judge of character.

It had been almost two years ago when Ginny brought her then-boyfriend Mason to Sarah’s apartment for dinner for the first time. She had been dating him for a little over a month. Shortly after they arrived at the apartment, Tasha Yarn stubbornly inserted herself on the couch between Ginny and Mason. The cat’s fur bristled and she kept hissing at Mason whenever he tried to touch either her or the cat. Ginny had been amused by the cat’s protectiveness, but after the fourth or fifth hiss, Mason got mad about it and brusquely shoved the cat off the couch.

Ginny knew right then that Mason was not the one for her, and immediately showed him the door.

Ever since then, all prospective suitors were eventually introduced to Tasha Yarn. Several had passed “The Tasha Test”, but they were few and far between, and none of them had yet proven to be that mythical “One”.

My Flash Fiction round two story “The Hunger” (which you can read here: https://roina-arwen.dreamwidth.org/7483.html) actually got 12th place in my group, and earned me four points (1st place gets 15 points, and the points go down from there).

On the one hand, that’s an improvement from round one - yay!!
On the other hand, since round one netted me 0 points, my total points for both rounds (which is four) is not enough to get me into the top 5 for my group, so I’m not advancing to the next round.

But hey!! Twelfth is a huge improvement, so I’ll take it!

Darya knelt at the edge of the forest, nervously folding and unfolding her tear-dampened handkerchief while she waited for the first light of dawn. Before her, the Sacred Sea glinted silver in the bright moonlight. The weather predictions had been correct - the sky was cloudless, and perfect for her needs.

On the ground next to Darya lay a sharp pair of shears. She toyed with the end of her long, blonde braid as she thought through her actions and expectations. She loved Pyotr more than life itself, but his heart had been broken too many times.

Her greatest desire was to help piece his fragile heart back together, to make him capable of loving her fully.

That thought was all Darya needed to spur her to pick up the shears and cut a long ribbon from the colorfully dyed handkerchief. She blotted her tears one last time, stood, and tied the ribbon to the branch of a larch tree near the shore of the lake.

Alara and Ilayda surfaced from the cold, sapphire blue lake, their dark eyes shining brightly with youthful laughter. Swimming was not only their favorite pastime, but their life line. The twins relied on their innate aquatic skills to not only provide sustenance for their nomadic clan, but also to attend to the welfare of the silvery-grey Nerpa, the only freshwater seals in existence.

Ilayda tilted her bronzed face sunward, clasped her hands loosely over her torso, and let the water cradle her lithe body. Her long dark hair spilled across the surface, creating the appearance of ebony wings. She bobbed on the gentle waves and sighed happily.

They were finally out of sight of the imposing rocky cliffs of the western shore. The twins made their home on the sparsely populated eastern side of the rift lake. They enjoyed the solitude, communing with nature, and got along well with each other.

She wore Mom Jeans with pride,
sometimes layered under her dress.
She had several which laced up the side,
much to her daughter’s distress.

As she strode briskly down the hall,
she activated her blue Heelys.
The extra speed was such a ball,
and she enjoyed popping wheelies!

She missed the days of Gangsta Rap
and the angsty lyrics of Grunge.
The silicone bracelet her wrist did slap,
when she practiced her Zumba lunge.

As a doctor, she loved SoBe Pure Rush,
an energy drink in Appleberry Burst.
It was hella good and the caffeine did gush -
while it also alleviated her thirst.

Checking the vitals of her Tomagotchi,
she tried hard not to expose her -
her digital pet thrived, attention was key,
but her detractors would call her a poseur.

She approached the ER, and was saved by the bell,
when her name resounded over the announcer.
She responded at the desk, and was heard to tell,
“Yes indeed - I’m Cheugy Howser!”

Zarina tried very hard to moderate her pace down the long hallway, but she was so excited for her long-desired apprenticeship that she arrived at the huge Citadel kitchen extra early. The sun was barely peeking over the horizon, but the chefs and their assistants had been hard at work for hours. The heady smell of freshly baked bread and sugary cinnamon buns tickled her nose and tantalized her taste buds.

“Greetings, Tantine Leona,” she said politely to the plump woman, adding a small curtsey of respect along with the honorary title of Auntie, often used with older women as a measure of respect.

Her stomach rumbled as a tray of warm almond pastries wafted by, bound for the dining hall breakfast rush. Zarina had broken her fast of course, but as with most adolescents, her appetite knew no bounds.

Leona was pleased with her new apprentice’s eagerness. She led Zarina back to the prep station and handed her a grey apron. “Put this on, wash your hands, and then we shall see what your knife skills look like,” she stated, motioning towards the sturdy cutting board and the overflowing crate of vegetables and purple tubers that awaited her.

Just checked on my Flash Fiction Round two assignment, which I have 48 hours to write and submit.

Maximum length is 1000 words.

My Genre is HORROR
My Location is “A club meeting”
My Object is “a welcome mat.”

I mean, it could be a Horror writer’s club with a welcome mat by the door, and perhaps someone is going “10 Little Indians” on them, but sheesh…

Ideas are welcome!

Well, my Flash Fiction round 1 challenge didn’t get into the top 15 for my grouping, but everyone still gets to participate in round 2. The new prompts will be posted later today (Friday at 11:59 pm) and scores from both rounds will be added together to see whom from each grouping makes it into round 3.

Feedback for my round one entry should be received at some point tomorrow, so contestants will have the info before round two. I always like to read and absorb the professional feedback; frankly, I think that alone is worth the cost of admission, so to speak.

Live and learn.
roina_arwen: Lilo kissing Stitch on the cheek (Lilo & Stitch Kiss - Stressed Stitch)
Cracking my toe on the iron table leg, I
Utter blasphemous words, loudly,
Releasing my agony and frustration.
Shit, why wasn’t I more careful?
Everything is flooded in red, as pain
Suffuses all colors and thought patterns.

Frak, fuck, phooey, and fiddlesticks -
One word works as well as another,
If said with the proper tone and emphasis.
Lo, I hadn’t planned on using any of these
Euphemisms today, but when injury strikes,
Damn those uncultured phrases all to hell!

As I stretch out on the sofa, my toe throbs angrily.
Groaning, my orange cat decides I’m ripe for pouncing.
Argh. It’s not her fault I’m in such a tender state.
I wince, take a deep breath, and pet her gently.
Not knowing about my toe, she blankets me with purrs.

Sovann and Zarina were granted a seven-day to move from their home on the outskirts of the capital into their assigned apartment in the High Matriarch’s Citadel, at the center of Capital City.

It was a lovely apartment in the East Tower, comfortably furnished. Zarina was pleased to learn she would have her own bedroom, instead of an alcove off of her mother’s. She was also excited to attend school at the Citadel, and meet other children whose mothers were as special as her own.

Sovann looked at her reflection in the hallway mirror. She had been fitted for several bright blue dresses, each of which featured two small gold buttons below the throat, a thin blue and gold braided belt, and the required gauzy black veil to cover her head and face at all times when out in public. Inside the Citadel, away from public view, her face could remain uncovered. Sovann’s long hair was in a simple plait down her back, and several dark hair pins held the veil firmly in place.

As an Apprentice Matriarch - a position that she would hold for her first five years of service - these dresses would be her daily work wear.

Most of her days from now on would be spent in the study of national and international laws and important legal decisions, centuries of history, the variety of belief systems that might influence the Sovereignty, and much more. Sovann would sit in on all Council sessions, but would not have a voice in the Council itself - only within the cloistered privacy of the Chambers - until she had graduated to full Matriarch status. She was primarily to absorb information, to help her make rational decisions in the future.

Sovann knocked lightly on Zarina’s door before opening it. “Are you dressed and ready for school?”

Just like her mother, Zarina was admiring her reflection. The loose white shirt sleeves fluttered at her elbows, and the knee length blue jumper looked lovely on her - the color brought out her eyes and bright smile. “Yes, mama - I’m ready!”

“I made you jam toast. Eat quickly, then I’ll bring you down to your school room.”

Sovann wanted desperately to be a Matriarch. Her great grandmother had received the honor, but neither her grandmother nor mother had qualified for the esteemed title.

As a descendant of Matriarch Audrea, the females in her line had received many privileges, such as better educational opportunities, larger living quarters near the Capital, and extra subsistence credits.

Sovann was nervous because she was the third generation removed, which meant those extra blessings would end tomorrow, on her fortieth birthday, if she was unable to meet the qualifications. She wanted so much to have a say in her government, and the Council of Matriarchs was an important part of the process.

She gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Her dark ebony skin was unblemished, and her waist-long mahogany hair was as fine as watered silk. Her bright amber eyes were her favorite feature, and Sovann subtly applied pale gold eyeshadow to play them up. Once she was satisfied, she straightened her long white and silver dress, stepped in to her soft-soled silvery shoes, and reported to work at the embassy.

Sovann strode down the expansive hallway, her thoughts occupied by her two daughters. Her eldest, Audriana, had recently finished her education, married, and started her own career, so her life would not be affected very much if Sovann did not succeed in becoming a Matriarch. However, her younger child, Zarina, would likely have to change schools, to one with fewer educators per child, and they would need to move to a smaller domicile by the end of the year. With a worried sigh, she sat down at her desk to read through and process the pile of paperwork that was waiting for her.

Mary entered her mistress’s study with a polite knock and a perfunctory curtsey.

“What is it, Mary?”

Mary approached her mistress’s writing desk. “A letter has arrived for you, madam.”

Martha took it, and waved Mary away with a warm smile. “Thank you, you may go.”

As soon as she was alone, Martha gazed at the folded parchment. She did not recognize the handwriting. It wasn’t her husband’s hasty script, at any rate.

She broke the wax seal and read the contents. As she did, a slow smile spread across her youthful face, and she brushed a wayward lock of auburn hair back behind her ear as she quickly rose, strode to the doorway, and glanced down the hall. “Mary, come to my quarters - we have a trip to pack for!”

=#=#=#=#=

The following morning, Martha and her maidservant boarded the estate’s private carriage. A footman rode at the back, and the driver sat stiffly up front on the box seat. Her oak traveling case - filled with a selection of her favorite gowns, petticoats, aprons, and shifts - was safely stored on the roof, along with a much smaller case with a change of clothes for Mary.

The horses nickered as they started out on their long journey from Virginia to Pennsylvania, one that Martha knew would take at least five days.

The steady clip-clop of the horses iron-shod hooves, along with the oppressive June humidity, soon put Mary into a light doze on the seat opposite hers, while Martha nimbly worked on decorating the border of a large kerchief with elaborate embroidery.

Martha hadn’t seen her husband in nearly six months, and had been pleasantly surprised at being sent for. She could hardly wait to throw herself into his arms and kiss his soft lips. He wasn’t much of a talker, but his smile melted her heart.

She sighed happily and cast her hazel gaze over the slowly moving landscape outside her carriage window for a few minutes, before turning her attention back to her needlework.
