LJ Idol, Home Game - Prompt 20: "Regrets, I’ve had a few “

“Yeah, I’ve had a few regrets… I just don’t want to talk about it right now,” Vic said, as he slouched down and pushed his wavy shoulder length hair away from his face.

Spotting a loose thread on the hem of his Dr. Strange T-shirt, Vic slowly and deliberately pulled at it, brow furrowed in concentration.

Glenda nodded, and scribbled a few sentences on her notepad. “We’ll come back to you,” she said, then glanced to her left. “Frank? Would you like to share something?”

Frankie ignored her and stared at his hands, trying to remove particles of imaginary dirt from beneath his pristine fingernails.

“Frank?”

He startled, and finally glanced up. “What?”

“Would you like to share any regrets you’ve been holding on to?” Glenda asked.

“Oh… uh… sure,” Frankie said, and slowly wiped the palms of his hands up and down the thighs of his freshly washed blue jeans, deep in thought. “Well, I suppose one regret is how long I hold onto grudges against people who have wronged me. I’m not one to just forgive and forget, you know?”

Glenda jotted down a few notes, including Victor’s not-so-surreptitious eye roll. “That’s a very good insight,” she replied. “Anything else?”

Frankie shook his head. “Not yet.”

Glenda swiveled her chair slightly to the right. “Victor? It’s your turn now.”

Vic sighed dramatically, and straightened up. “Fine. I regret my impulse to meddle in affairs that are beyond the ken of mortal men.”

He glanced almost sheepishly at Frank, then down at the carpeted floor. “I’m sorry,” he mumbled.

Frank’s watery blue eyes widened. “Pardon? I didn’t quite catch that.”

Victor looked Frank directly in the face. His angular chin and squared-off forehead gave him a perpetually stern look. “I’m sorry,” Vic repeated. “I’m sorry I tried to create life, I’m sorry I couldn’t make you the man that I envisioned. I’m sorry you’ve been treated like a monster,” he cried. He rose abruptly and strode to the window, where he stood, head down, shoulders slumped and shaking.

Frankie could see Vic’s reflection in the window. There were tears streaming down Victor’s smooth, youthful cheeks. Frank felt a few sympathetic droplets flowing down his own weather-worn face.

“It’s all my fault and I’M SORRY!” Victor stated, turning back around. He glanced at Glenda. She had happy tears in her eyes, and smiled at him, pleased with his breakthrough.

Frank stood, unfolding his burly form from the chair, and rose to his full eight feet of height. He enveloped the smaller man in a hug. “I forgive you,” he said softly, and thumped him on the back. “Truly, Victor Frankenstein, I do.”

LJ Idol, Prompt 18a: “Swim Until You Can't See Land”

Alara and Ilayda surfaced from the cold, sapphire blue lake, their dark eyes shining brightly with youthful laughter. Swimming was not only their favorite pastime, but their life line. The twins relied on their innate aquatic skills to not only provide sustenance for their nomadic clan, but also to attend to the welfare of the silvery-grey Nerpa, the only freshwater seals in existence.

Ilayda tilted her bronzed face sunward, clasped her hands loosely over her torso, and let the water cradle her lithe body. Her long dark hair spilled across the surface, creating the appearance of ebony wings. She bobbed on the gentle waves and sighed happily.

They were finally out of sight of the imposing rocky cliffs of the western shore. The twins made their home on the sparsely populated eastern side of the rift lake. They enjoyed the solitude, communing with nature, and got along well with each other.

LJ Idol, Prompt 13: “Kintsugi”

Sovann wanted desperately to be a Matriarch. Her great grandmother had received the honor, but neither her grandmother nor mother had qualified for the esteemed title.

As a descendant of Matriarch Audrea, the females in her line had received many privileges, such as better educational opportunities, larger living quarters near the Capital, and extra subsistence credits.

Sovann was nervous because she was the third generation removed, which meant those extra blessings would end tomorrow, on her fortieth birthday, if she was unable to meet the qualifications. She wanted so much to have a say in her government, and the Council of Matriarchs was an important part of the process.

She gazed at her reflection in the mirror. Her dark ebony skin was unblemished, and her waist-long mahogany hair was as fine as watered silk. Her bright amber eyes were her favorite feature, and Sovann subtly applied pale gold eyeshadow to play them up. Once she was satisfied, she straightened her long white and silver dress, stepped in to her soft-soled silvery shoes, and reported to work at the embassy.

Sovann strode down the expansive hallway, her thoughts occupied by her two daughters. Her eldest, Audriana, had recently finished her education, married, and started her own career, so her life would not be affected very much if Sovann did not succeed in becoming a Matriarch. However, her younger child, Zarina, would likely have to change schools, to one with fewer educators per child, and they would need to move to a smaller domicile by the end of the year. With a worried sigh, she sat down at her desk to read through and process the pile of paperwork that was waiting for her.

LJ Idol, Prompt 11: “Surgery often looks like murder if you judge it halfway through.”

Calm. Be calm. Just breathe… take a deep breath. Slowly in through the nose, out through the mouth.

Allahna pursed her lips and released the lungful of warm air with a light whoosh. As she did, she woke her chakra, and opened her inner eye. Ah… much better.

The canvas in front of her was blank, stark white. She had a lot of work to do.

Allahna glanced to her left. Adam’s canvas was filled with a field of bright, spring green grass, dotted with tiny yellow flowers that bloomed under a clear cerulean sky. Pretty, but not particularly inspired. To her right, Astrid appeared to be creating an underwater scene of deep indigo. She was currently applying her digital brush towards adding astounding detail to an enormous yet sleek grey creature, which swam leisurely from right to left. Most impressive.

Picking up her own brush, Allahna programmed it to deepest black. The color would make an excellent base, and get rid of the weirdly intimidating whiteness.

With a few bold strokes, Allahna felt much better. The darkness pulled at her.

She pushed back with vibrant vermillion, a veritable vein of red that exploded across the blackness, creating puddles of perfidy.

Damn, that felt good.

Behind her, Allahna could sense their professor’s judgment, as his dark eyes scanned her canvas. She glanced over her shoulder. His eyes narrowed but he nodded once, his pinched face showing a hint of a smile, then wandered silently over towards Adam. He passed by with a shake of his hooded head and loud snort of derision.

She had work to do.

As her lushly dark landscape expanded, a warm knot of power germinated inside her. Allahna inhaled sharply, and flourished her brush across the canvas one last time.

Dark diamond sparks suddenly exploded outward from her fingertips and studded the night sky before her. The red poppies flared brilliantly, and began to flutter.

A gush of light burst from her chest, and tiny forms suddenly appeared curled up on the canvas.

They woke, stretched, turned their eyes skyward, then fell to their knees and bowed reverently.

Allahna felt her newfound power swell.

The energy coursing through her was beyond amazing!

Allahna retrieved another primed canvas and confidently flourished her brush. There was so much more yet to do!

She opened her soul to the universe, inhaled the effervescence of the cosmos, and joyfully began.
